Cara Singleton is a designer living in Los Angeles who grew up in Austin, Texas and spent much of her childhood living in San Miguel de Allende.
Cara always dreamed of owning her own home in Mexico, so she eagerly accepted Alex's proposed business venture, thinking it would expand into a bigger involvement with Mexico. When she realized that she had been conned, she decided to fight back. She refuses to let Alex steal her dream and wants to expose the harm he has caused to her and so many others. Cara is committed to finding out if she can win her fight for justice through the Mexican legal system.
Who is Alex? In one story he claims to be Argentinian; in another, Italian. He also said he grew up in Los Angeles. He boasts of having a “fan” of passports and that he has bank accounts in Mexico and Argentina.
He is not a licensed architect in Mexico or the United States. He said he studied at UCLA, but the university has no record of him. Cara’s attorney says that he is a “ghost” in Cabo. His name doesn’t come up on any legal documents, including land ownership, which is very strange for a 20-year resident who builds houses.
The only information you will find on Alex Matijas on the Internet is the information on his website. Even his “press” links to supposed magazine articles don’t exist – all you see are photos of four magazine covers without reference to him.
John Moreno, who owns the title to Cara’s land, is an attorney who works closely with AmeriMex Realty, the family business started by his American-born mother.
There is no doubt that this family has had and continues to wield a lot of power in Todos Santos. Various sources allege that they benefit from suspect real estate tactics and operate above the law. For example, although they claim to be environmentalists, they are accused by locals of destroying an environmentally sensitive lagoon by rerouting its fresh water.
Dennis John Peyton, Cara's attorney, is licensed to practice law in Mexico and specializes in defending Americans with Mexican real estate holdings or foreign investment in Mexico. Mr. Peyton has over 25 years practicing law in Mexico and is one of the first Americans licensed to practice law in Mexico.
AmeriMex Realty is owned by the Moreno family. The house that Alex completed, Vista Ballenas, is currently listed for sale at $2,000,000 USD.
